Proofreading and editing

Proofreading and editing ensure and improve the quality of your text or its translation. While proofreading focuses more on formal aspects such as spelling and grammar, editing concentrates more on content aspects such as word choice and style. If both are carried out, your text will be formally correct down to the last detail and consistent in terms of content, so that it can be used immediately for your purposes.

We always recommend proofreading and editing before publications and printing. Ultimately, it always depends on the purpose and use of the text whether these two language services are necessary to improve it. We will be happy to advise you on this.

Below, we provide a brief overview of the three language services we offer: simple proofreading, comparative proofreading and, finally, editing.

Korrekturlesen und Lektorat

Simple proofreading

Simple proofreading involves checking a text for formal aspects, i.e. spelling, grammar, punctuation and hyphenation, and correcting them if necessary. In these respects, the corrected text is formally perfect.

Comparative proofreading

In comparative proofreading – also known as revision – a text is checked for the same formal aspects as in simple proofreading, with the difference that here it is a target text that is compared with its source text. In addition to checking for compliance with the norms of the target language, the completeness of the translation is also checked.

Editing

Editing goes one step further to refine your text. It checks whether the source text is also correct and appropriate in terms of content, in accordance with the rules of the target language. The target audience, cultural context and regional specifics are taken into account. Questions such as the following are addressed: Is the style appropriate? Are the metaphors or other figures of speech used understandable? Do other words need to be chosen to better convey the message of the text? Is terminology used correctly and consistently? Does the text read fluently? The final edited text will certainly not fail to achieve its purpose, but will hit the mark.
