Basic model ‘ISO 17100’
This basic model is based on DIN EN ISO 17100, a European and internationally recognised standard for translation services. As a further development of DIN EN 15038, it specifies all aspects of the translation process that influence the quality and provision of translation services. – Unter Team now works consistently in accordance with the ISO 17100 standard for translation services. Our workflows are documented in a binding process manual and are continuously applied and monitored. In addition, we are officially ISO 17100 certified. This ensures that our translation processes meet the highest quality, transparency and security requirements.
As in the basic ‘Standard’ model, the translation process is divided into three phases: A. Project preparation, B. Production process, C. Project follow-up. In the basic ‘ISO 17100’ model, a project manager is also responsible for managing and monitoring the translation process. This person is also the first point of contact for questions and acts as an intermediary between customers and producers.
The ‘ISO 17100’ basic model differs from our ‘Standard’ model in that the translation must be followed by a revision, which is carried out by a person other than the author of the translation. This is why it is also referred to as the four-eyes principle. Subsequent services, such as a technical review or proofreading, are optional.
Below, we would like to give you an overview of the three phases mentioned above and the steps involved in each.
A. During project preparation, administrative aspects (registration and assignment of the translation project), technical aspects (such as the choice of resources) and linguistic aspects (analysis of the source language content, terminology and style guidelines, etc.) are clarified. These activities are carried out by the project manager responsible for the respective project.
B. The actual translation takes place during the production process. It must comply with the target language conventions, specifications and purpose of the translation project. In particular, the following points must be fulfilled:
a) Compliance with subject area and customer terminology;
b) Semantic correctness of the target language content;
c) appropriate syntax, spelling, punctuation, diacritical marks and other orthographic conventions of the target language;
d) lexical cohesion and phraseology;
e) adherence to our own and/or the customer’s style guidelines;
f) consideration of the locale;
g) formatting;
h) target audience and purpose of the target language content.
The translation produced in this way is then checked by its author, i.e. checked for possible semantic, grammatical and orthographic problems and for compliance with the project specifications.
In the next step, the checked translation is revised by a second person. A revision is the bilingual checking of target language content against the source language content. The same conditions apply to the revision as to the translation (see above).
In further optional steps, the revised translation can be checked by a subject matter expert and/or proofread.
The translation, which has been checked several times in this way, is then returned to the project manager, who confirms in the verification step that all project specifications agreed with the client have been met. Once verification has been completed, the project is released and the product is delivered to the client.
C. The project follow-up includes feedback that the customer can give us about the project. This helps us to continuously improve our working methods.
The final step of the project is its administrative completion. This requires that all legal and/or contractual obligations regarding the archiving or deletion of customer data and its protection must be fulfilled.
